Ground screw specifications

Read the system,
not just the length.

Two ground screws can be the same length and still be very different. Diameter, wall thickness, steel, corrosion protection, lower screw shape and the head or bracket all matter.

Specification checklist

Six things to compare.

Do not compare ground screws on length and price alone. Compare the whole product.

01

Shaft size

Compare the length, outside diameter and wall thickness from the product data.

02

Lower screw shape

The helix, blade or tip affects how the screw goes into the ground and how it performs.

03

Head & fixings

The top of the screw must suit the timber, steel, beam or modular frame above it.

04

Corrosion protection

Check what coating or corrosion protection is actually declared for the product.

05

Installation method

Check how the product is meant to be installed and what equipment or checks are required.

06

Product & test data

Use the manufacturer data and test information for the actual ground screw being considered.

Corrosion & durability

How long a ground screw lasts depends on where it is installed.

Ground chemistry, moisture, damage to the coating and the thickness of the steel can all affect durability.

That is why we do not apply one blanket “25 year” or “50+ year” claim to every ground screw. Where lifespan matters, check the documentation for the actual product and site.

Bad comparison

“Both screws are 1,200 mm, so they are equivalent.”

Length alone does not tell you the shaft, wall, helix, head, steel, coating, installation requirements or verified load basis.

Better comparison

Compare the complete technical system.

Compare the declared product data like for like before using price to make the final decision.

Specification FAQs

Ground screw specification questions, answered.

Direct answers on steel, galvanising, service life, dimensions and what technical information should be compared.

01

What are ground screws made of?

Structural ground screws are made from steel, but the steel grade, wall thickness, welds, screw shape and corrosion protection can vary between products. Check the data for the actual screw you are comparing.

02

Are ground screws galvanised?

Many ground screws are galvanised for corrosion protection, but the coating can differ between products. Check the manufacturer information rather than assuming every ground screw has the same protection.

03

How long do ground screws last?

How long a ground screw lasts depends on the steel, corrosion protection, ground conditions and how it is installed. Do not apply one blanket lifespan to every product and every site.

04

What ground screw specification should I compare?

Compare the length, diameter, wall thickness, lower screw shape, head or bracket, corrosion protection, product data, installation method and load information. Two screws with the same length can still be very different products.

05

Does a thicker or larger ground screw mean a stronger foundation?

Not by itself. A bigger or thicker screw can carry more in some situations, but the screw shape, building loads, ground, installation depth and fixings all matter as well.
